In 1973, the New England Journal of Medicine released findings that showed the airways of both asthmatic and non-asthmatic people widened significantly after smoking marijuana. It was these findings that caused research to attempt to create a delivery system for THC. Unfortunately, the inhaler approach did not work because THC is too large of a molecule and would cause patients to cough uncontrollably during and shortly after its use.
