Top tips for traveling on a budget

Traveling doesn’t have to break the bank. While it’s easy to assume that only trust fund kids get to travel, this couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re hoping to travel more in 2019, here are some tips for traveling on a budget:

Choose the right time

You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by being strategic about when you actually travel. Avoid the school holidays at all costs. If you’re heading to Europe, make sure you avoid July and August- September is a great time to travel and May and early June can also be excellent. Not only will you pay less, but you’ll avoid the worst of the heat and crowds.

Plan in advance

The earlier you begin planning your trip, the better. Not only will you be able to snap up the best deals, but you’ll also be able to put a little money away each week- instead of dipping into your savings or using your credit card.

Keep an eye out for some of the great deals offered by airlines, tour companies, and cruises. Sign up for newsletters, and be prepared to jump on an amazing deal- you can save thousands this way.

Take travel insurance

Ok, so you’ll need to pay a little more for your trip. But it’s well worth it. You never know when you’ll lose your passport, be victim of a crime, or break an ankle. It’s easy to assume you’ll be fine, but if you end up with appendicitis overseas, you’re in big financial trouble if you don’t have travel insurance. While there are some excellent options like 24Cash.ca if you have an emergency situation, you’ll want an insurance company to have your back.

Choose the right destination

The destination you choose will greatly impact how much you spend- and how long you can afford to travel. If you want to lie on a beach, destinations like Vietnam and Thailand are much cheaper than Tahiti and Bora Bora.

Get creative with your destinations and you can save a lot of money. Plus, you’ll often be visiting places that are a little more off-the-beaten path. Choose Central America over the Carbbean, Eastern Europe over Western Europe, and Southeast Asia over Canada.

If you haven’t traveled in many developing countries, you may be surprised at just how far your dollar will go. You’ll often be able to stay in a really nice hotel for less than $50 a night, while meals will be just a few dollars. This means you can travel for longer.
